High-performance football within a clear development pathway
At Oxfordshire Regional Talent Centre, our JPL squads represent the highest level of performance football within our player pathway. These squads compete in the Junior Premier League (JPL), the world’s largest youth football league, providing players with a competitive, development-led environment that sits between grassroots football and professional academy pathways.
What are the JPL squads?
JPL squads are designed for players who demonstrate strong technical ability, game understanding, commitment and a desire to challenge themselves in a high-performance setting. The programme is development-focused, but competitive, offering players regular high-quality fixtures, structured training and exposure to demanding football environments.
Our JPL squads operate with clear expectations around attitude, effort and behaviour, while maintaining the positive, supportive culture that defines Oxfordshire RTC.
Who are the JPL squads for?
JPL squads are suitable for players who:
- Are ready for a higher level of training and competition
- Show consistency, commitment and a growth mindset
- Want to be challenged within a structured pathway
- Are seeking exposure to strong opposition and elite environments
- Selection is based on ability, attitude and long-term potential rather than short-term performance alone.
Training & Competition
JPL squads typically train two to three times per week, depending on age group and phase of development, with structured sessions led by experienced, highly qualified coaches.
Alongside training, squads compete weekly in the Junior Premier League, with additional fixtures, festivals, tours and showcase opportunities across the season. Programmes are designed to balance workload, recovery and development.
Trials & Selection Process
Oxfordshire RTC hosts formal JPL trials between April and June each year to select squads for the forthcoming season. These trial periods allow us to assess players thoroughly and place them in the most appropriate environment.
Outside of the main trial window, spaces within JPL squads are limited. However, we always welcome expressions of interest and will invite players to train with the squad before advising on the most suitable section of the club to support their development.
